West Country Longhouse

Here was an opportunity to complete a restoration and extension project which effectively started in the 17th Century! Originally less than a quarter of its present size, it began life as a bailiff’s cottage, built from local granite. 19th, 20th and 21st Century extensions resulted in its present form, which provides substantial five bedroom accommodation with more than generous reception space.

However, although cleverly thought out architecturally, little consideration had been given to the interior decoration. This is where Robert began work. First, he installed three extra bathrooms and two additional open fireplaces, to maximise country house comfort. Next, he added architectural detailing in the form of cornicing, architraves, arches and painted panelling to the more recent part of the house to create a sense of period continuity.

The present house is set within a beautiful established garden, so Robert decided that the interior decoration must reflect the textures and colours seen in the landscape, as well as compliment the period of the house.
