About Robert Carslaw

Robert’s practice has attracted clients from several European countries as well as all over the United Kingdom and Ireland. This means that he has been able to base his work in different cultures and landscapes, which is important to him since fundamental to his approach to interior design, is his artistic sense of local architecture, indigenous materials, light and climate. His attitude to design is that it is not simply his ‘house look’ to be stamped on every project regardless, but what reflects the individual client and location.

At the traditional end, having purchased a listed 18th Century London townhouse, a commercial client commissioned Robert to create three floors of offices suites with an apartment on the top two floors. The interiors were to be decorated and furnished entirely in keeping with the period of the building, which was blessed with magnificent plasterwork and painted ceilings. There followed two similar projects for different clients in Mayfair and St James’s.

At the contemporary end, the brief for a new build modern house in the rustic setting of Cornwall’s south coast required equally modern interiors. Robert took the opportunity to design furniture and fittings made from timber, slate and glass, and to use grass papers, hessians and linens. The success of this house lies in its sense of complete harmony with its setting, perfect peace, and its simple but sumptuous comfort.
